About me

Rohan Gillett

Hi, my name is Rohan Gillett, a photographer. I’m from the Sunshine Coast in Australia. In 1991, I came to Japan for the first time and fell in love with Tokyo. It is a great city and awesome place to live. There is so much to see. Even though I’ve been here for nearly thirty years, I’m still finding new things. It’s what I do, explore.

Ever since arriving, I’ve been going to different parts of the city on weekends. I’ve spent countless hours walking and exploring it. Shops, restaurants, and so much more has been interesting. All those weekends let me to build up local knowledge! I’m still doing that. Tokyo is a vivid and dynamic city. It is constantly changing and growing. Learning about this city will never end.

Why did I start Tokyo in Pics?

Many year ago, I started this blog, Tokyo in Pics. Actually, that is why I took up photography. The articles needed provide pictures. There are many great places, events, and people here to shoot. I’m going to share it with you. If you have any ideas for articles or pictures you’d like to see on the website, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

What photo gear do I use?

Camera bodies:

  • Canon EOS R5
  • Fujifilm X-T2
  • Fujifilm X-T3
  • Pentax K3

Lenses

I no longer use Pentax. The last time I used that brand was in 2017. Some photos up until that year still appear on this blog, though. That company does make good cameras. I do miss them sometimes. Nostalgia pulls the heartstrings occasionally

Why do I use Fujifilm cameras?

Fujifilm cameras have gained a reputation for their quality and unique characteristics. They are popular among amateur and professional photographers. Here are some reasons why I like Fujifilm cameras (especially the X-T3):

  • Image Quality: Fujifilm cameras are known for their exceptional image quality. I can’t fault them. What they give for their price is incredible.
  • Film Simulation Modes: Fujifilm has a rich history in film photography. They’ve incorporated this heritage into their digital cameras. They have many film simulation modes. These mimic the look of classic Fujifilm film stocks like Provia, Velvia, and Astia. Of course, there is my favorite Eterna. They allows photographers to achieve a unique and nostalgic aesthetic.
  • Retro Design: The X-Series cameras often feature a retro and stylish. They are like classic film cameras. I like this as it has a tactile feel.
  • Compact and Lightweight: They are ideal for travel and street photography. They aren’t a burden to carry.
  • Lens Selection: Fujifilm has a range of high-quality lenses. True, they can be expensive, but they are superb.
  • Build Quality: Fujifilm is known for its attention to build quality and durability. In my experience, their cameras are well-constructed and weather-sealed. That makes them suitable for outdoor and challenging shooting conditions.
  • Intuitive Controls: Fujifilm cameras feature intuitive and user-friendly control layouts. That includes physical dials for settings like aperture, shutter speed, and exposure compensation. I really appreciate this.

It’s important to note that this is all subjective. You might have a different opinion of Fujifilm cameras. Everyone has their own needs and preferences. But I find them excellent for what I want. How about you? If you want to see more of them, see the official website.

Where to buy cameras in Tokyo?

I recommend buying your cameras and lenses at MapCamera in Shinjuku. They have been my go-to spot for camera gear since 2017. I hope you will be as happy shopping with them as I have been.
