Caretta Shiodome Sky View offers some good Tokyo Bay views. If you want to enjoy some cityscapes of the city, it is one of the best places to go. It is particularly good at night! Make sure you take a camera with you.
I have to say, it’s not a real observatory. It consists of a small lounge-type area, a few windows wide, on a restaurant floor. A restaurant floor that is forty-six floors up, in the Dentsu building! For those wanting a free viewing spot near Tokyo Bay, you can’t get better than this.
And it has one more bonus point. It has an excellent elevator! In my experience, this one is really good. The ride up to the top is an exciting one.
Why do photographers like Sky View?
The viewing windows are about ten meters across and divided into three sections. They give roughly a 170° field of view. From them, you can see a lot of great sights. They include:
- Hamarikyu Gardens
- Kachidoki Bridge
- Odaiba (including the Hachitama observatory)
There is a downside though. If you want to see towards the city center, you’ll have to enter one of the restaurants or bars that face that direction. Or you can enjoy it when you ride the elevator. That ride might be short, but it is a good one when Tokyo lights up!
- The windows get a lot of reflections, so carry a hood of some type if possible (they aren’t banned there).
- You can use tripods! Just make sure not to block anyone’s view.
Where is Sky View?
Shinbashi is the closest JR station. The following lines serve it:
- Ginza (Tokyo Metro)
Once you’re there, look for the Dentsu building. It is about a ten-minute walk away on the east side of Shinbashi Station. Then find the adjacent Caretta Shiodome’s shopping mall. Take the elevator (which is on the second floor of the basement (B2)) up to the forty-sixth floor. Sounds difficult? It’s not.
Here is a Google map:
Caretta Shiodome’s Sky View lounge and restaurant floors are open from 11 am to 11:30 pm. The lower shopping areas are open from 10 am to 8 pm.
Other photo spots in the area
- Ginza (the shopping area)
- Nakagin Capsule Tower (iconic Tokyo architecture)
Sky View is excellent, but it could have been so much better if it had that 360⁰ view. Still, it is worth going to enjoy the sights it offers. And while you are there, you can also enjoy some great restaurants and bars. You can see its website here. One last thing, if you go in December, also know that Caretta Shiodome puts on a Christmas light show.
