Christmas Lights: At Shinjuku Southern Terrace in 2017

2017 was drawing to a close. Christmas was back in Tokyo for another season, and the city lit up. For my first visit to see the decorations, I went to Shinjuku Southern Terrace. I dropped in to see them on my way home from work after 9 pm. The area should have been empty at that time, but I was wrong. There was a fair crowd, many people were on their way home from work, but some were there to enjoy some time out.

To be honest, I was disappointed that night.  The lights seemed to be the same as in the 2016 display.  It was a pity they had nothing new. Are changes necessary every time? Maybe yes, maybe no, but at least change keeps things fresh and draws interest. Still, people were there and looking. Starbucks made a roaring trade.

You should probably be aware that these light displays in Japan are only “light” displays. They have little or no connection to Christmas. Yes, there are a few trees at the front of the terrace. But, there are no Santas, elves, present boxes, or other traditional decorations. It’s not what I was brought up with.

For these photos, it was the first time I used a tripod at Shinjuku Southern Terrace. I didn’t see anyone else with one, which made me momentarily wonder if they were banned. There were no signs, so out it came. As always, keeping my gear out of the way of people was my number one priority. The tripod allowed me to take longer exposures, which I am fond of. Seeing the crowd “ghost” through pictures adds a surreal touch.

Many areas around Tokyo light up for the Christmas season and some go well into January. If you have ever been to any good displays, please let me know what they are like. You can also leave questions or comments below.
