Chasing the Autumn Sunset at Hama Rikyu Gardens

Have you ever wondered if it’s possible to watch the sunset from within Hama Rikyu Gardens? With the modern skyline of Shiodome on one side and the serene landscape of an Edo-period garden on the other, the potential for a spectacular view is undeniable. But, there’s a catch: the gardens typically close at 5:00 p.m.

For most of the year, this means visitors are ushered out long before the sun begins its descent. But for a brief period in late autumn, a magical window of opportunity opens. As the days grow shorter, the sunset in Tokyo can occur as early as 4:30 p.m., allowing you to witness the vibrant, fiery colors of dusk before the gates close. This rare alignment is what makes an autumn visit truly special.

A photographer's afternoon

On a trip in 2021, I decided to seize this opportunity. I arrived well before two o’clock, giving myself hours to wander through the grounds and capture the park’s beauty in the full light of day. Autumn is a cherished season in Japan, and Tokyoites were out in force. They enjoyed the crisp air and the seasonal foliage that peaks from mid-November to early December.

As the afternoon wore on, the temperature began to drop, yet a quiet energy remained. While visitors continued to stroll across the bridges and along the paths of the tidal pond, my anticipation grew. The sky was showing promise, and I positioned myself, hoping for a moment of stillness without crowds in my frame.

The final photograph of the day was the one I had dreamed of. As the sun dipped below the horizon, it cast a brilliant, fiery glow over the Nakajima teahouse. The traditional wooden structure stood in stunning contrast to the modern skyscrapers behind it, with the iconic Tokyo Tower visible in the distance. It was a moment of perfect harmony between old and new, nature and city. It was a sight I will long remember.

How to plan your sunset visit

If you want to capture this unique sunset for yourself, timing is everything.

  • When to Go: Aim for a visit between mid-November and early December. This is not only the best time for autumn colors but also when the sun sets comfortably before the park’s closing time.
  • The Golden Window: Hama Rikyu Gardens closes at 5:00 p.m., with last entry at 4:30 p.m. In late autumn, sunset happens around 4:30 p.m., giving you a 15-to-20-minute window to take pictures. Be sure to be on your way to the exit as 5:00 p.m. approaches to ensure you are out before the gates are locked.

A moment worth pursuing

A return trip to witness this spectacle is certainly on my list. Photography is always dependent on the whims of the weather. So the chance to see such a brilliant sunset at Hama Rikyu Gardens is a reminder of the unique beauty that autumn in Tokyo has to offer.
