Omiya Hachimangu Chrysanthemum Exhibit 2019
A visit to the annual Omiya Hachimangu chrysanthemum exhibit in November has become a seasonal tradition for me. It’s often my first stop of the chrysanthemum season, a fact that, ironically, means I rarely see the flowers in their full glory. My timing is consistently a little too early as there are many flower festivals to see in that season. I always wonder what they look like in peak bloom. It’s a recurring reminder of a universal wish: wouldn’t it be wonderful to have unlimited time for the things we are passionate about?
Photographing the Omiya Hachimangu Chrysanthemum Exhibit
During my Omiya Hachimangu Chrysanthemum Festival visit, I put this philosophy into practice. While many of the blooms had yet to reach their peak, this apparent drawback became an opportunity. It compelled me to look more closely, to seek out the individual flowers that were in their prime. This focused approach to my photography yielded results I am genuinely pleased with.
A photographer’s journey through Tokyo’s seasons
This is where the long game comes into play—a commitment to perseverance. My strategy is to remain dedicated to my craft, constantly seeking avenues for improvement and opportunities to showcase my work. It’s a familiar mantra, “never give up,” but it’s a fundamental truth in any creative pursuit. The experience served as a valuable lesson: even when conditions aren’t perfect, there is always beauty to be found if you’re willing to look for it.
