Rain Photography Thrilled Me in Shinjuku

Rain photography in Shinjuku was a first for me. I had wanted to do it for a long time. So when it started drizzling on a night shoot, I grabbed the opportunity. My umbrella went up, so I kept going. The excitement and rewards poured in.

The sprinkle soon ended. But it left behind enough water for reflections. Light bounced around everywhere. I had never seen this side of the city. A brighter and more colorful Shinjuku presented itself. I want it to happen soon.

I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again after having done it and survived. Just keep the water off your gear. Of course, protect yourself too!

Rain photography can be scary. Get water inside your camera or lens, and you might need repairs. Even worse, a new one might become necessary. So the question is, what can we do?

Rain photography: Protection tips

  • Most modern cameras and lenses are weather-resistant. Don’t confuse that with waterproof. They aren’t the same.
  • A few spots of moisture probably won’t damage your gear. Ask an underwater photographer for advice if you need to go underwater.
  • Cover your camera. I have a sleeve that covers the top and side now. A plastic bag with a hole at one end will do in a pinch.
  • Don’t forget umbrellas. A folding one is in my bag. It has saved me from many sudden showers.
  • Shooting from under a roof is best. The deeper you go undercover, the better.
  • Don’t point cameras toward the rain. Prevent moisture from entering lenses or getting near the front element.

Conclusion

Rain photography has risks, but also rewards. The images are stunning. One might argue that Shinjuku is more beautiful wet than dry.

I was hesitant to do it. But when I did, the experience was excellent. Hopefully, each time will improve better results.

The results can be incredible. But weigh the risks. Take the appropriate steps to keep your camera safe (and yourself, too!). Don’t step into storms or typhoons.
