Rikugien Gardens Autumn Light-Up 2024
The Rikugien Gardens Autumn Light-up is another Tokyo seasonal event I look forward to. It often borders on the magical for me. I get excited about it and 2024 was no exception. In some ways, it exceeded my expectations. But I left with mixed feelings. Let’s look at it.
I bought my ticket online a few days before my visit. Upon showing that to the staff, I was directed to that line. People who bought theirs on the night had to wait at another one. That was okay for me because I got in early.
This was the first thing I noticed. 2024 wasn’t crowded. It made for a pleasant experience. The paths around the pond were a rugby scrum in previous years. I’m not joking. There were so many people. We used to advance at a snail’s pace.
That wasn’t the case this year. We had space. There was no danger of getting lost in the crowd. It was brilliant. I could take my time taking photos. That was a first for a Rikugien Gardens Autumn Light-up event. It stayed like that for my entire visit.
With few people around, I had a low-stress evening. I could stand and take in the views. This time I stood on the bank of the pond and enjoyed the reflections in the pond. They made the night so much more beautiful.
And now for the bad news. The foliage wasn’t great for this 2024 event. There was a lot of green and brown. It took away some of the night’s magic. The most red I saw was probably in the umbrellas. But that is always my luck. I’m always at them either too early or late. Rarely do I see them during their peak. Am I cursed?
Anyway, I guess I left happy, though. Rikugien Gardens is a beautiful place day or night. It was another good chance to use my new Canon EOS R5. I’m happy with it. The camera worked well in the dark conditions. It picked up those reflections beautifully.
If you’ve had a hard day in Tokyo this is a great event to recharge your batteries. A walk around the pond is an awesome way to spend an evening. You’ll have a great time no matter what color the trees are.
