Sanja Festival 2025

The Sanja Festival goes for three days. It starts on Friday, but the main days are Saturday and Sunday. I couldn’t go to the first two days because of prior commitments in 2025, but I went on the last day.

I didn’t enjoy the weather from a photography standpoint as clouds filled the sky. But that kept temperatures at a comfortable level. The crowd appreciated that, I’m sure, even though blue skies were missing.

Do you remember I bought a Canon EOS R5 in November 2024? I’ve used it for nearly six months. The Sanja only confirmed that this camera is still a beast five years after release.

Canon EOS R5 at Sanja Festival 2025

  • I only have the RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM lens, so the 45 MP sensor allows deep cropping. That is a tremendous bonus.
  • The eye detection is amazing. It grabs people fast and consistently. Shooting the mikoshi crews at short range was easy, even with many people milling around them.

The camera performed superbly. It lacked for nothing. The only flaw, if you can call it that, is its weight. The R5 is a full-frame, and those are heavy (generally speaking). The same goes for the lenses.

Where did I take these photos?

  • Most were taken around Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate).
  • Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center (2nd and 8th floors)
  • Sensoji Temple steps (can you spot this one?)

Conclusion

Sanja Festival 2025 was another chance to gauge how the Canon EOS R5 performed. I’d recommend this camera to anyone provided they don’t mind the weight (it is a little heavy). The image quality is amazing.

If you’re reading this article overseas, see the Sanja one day. The crowds and the event’s energy need to be experienced to be believed. I’ve photographed it many times and will continue to do so. It’s amazing.

Japanese festivals are amazing. We have many of them to entertain us. To learn more about them check out Japanese Celebrations for Children on Amazon. Leave questions and comments below.
