Tokyo Samurai Festival 2025

Samurai ran wild in Ueno over the long weekend for the Emperor’s birthday in 2025. The event went for four days, but I could only go the Monday. We had great weather, which drew a huge crowd. It was an awesome day to photograph warriors, singers, and swords.

What was Tokyo Samurai Festival 2025?

It is an annual event that celebrates Japan’s samurai heritage. The action happens at Ueno Park’s Fountain Square. In 2025, there were numerous performances, including sword fighting displays, dance, and idol groups. Away from the stage, there were interactive experiences like armor try-ons and shuriken throwing. Of course, there was loads of food and drink.

What did I do there?

I spent all my time at the stage watching the performers. It was a lot of fun, but difficult work. The crowd was large so finding spots to take photos was time-consuming.

One thing was new for me in 2025. I saw an idol group. They were 戦国茶屋娘 (Sengoku Teahouse Girls). These girls were high-energy.

What is a (Japanese) idol group?

Idols are entertainers marketed for image, attractiveness, and personality in Japanese pop culture. Most are primarily singers with other skills such as acting, dancing, and modeling.

Many are commercialized through merchandise and endorsements by talent agencies. Maintaining a loyal consumer fan base is vital. Maybe you’ve heard of some groups like AKB46 and Babymetal.

Conclusion

You need to see this festival if you love samurai, ninjas, dance, and music. While much is stylized for the modern audience, it is fun. Luckily, it will return in 2026. Leave your questions and comments below.
