What is the ultimate color for a supercar? While many might instinctively point to a fiery red or a sleek black, the true connoisseur knows the answer is a bold, unapologetic yellow. It’s a choice that speaks of confidence, joy, and a desire to be seen. And recently, I found the perfect illustration of why.
Today, I visited Tokyo’s Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Avenue for another year. It’s famous for its stunning ginkgo trees. In the heart of autumn, the avenue transforms into a breathtaking golden tunnel as the leaves turn a brilliant, shimmering yellow. Walking beneath this canopy of gold, I was once again struck by how the color commands attention and radiates a vibrant energy. My conviction solidified: it looks great on supercars or around them.
The experience of being surrounded by the golden leaves of 146 ginkgo trees on the 300-meter boulevard is immersive. It’s a colorful and powerful spectacle. This is precisely what supercars need. They aren’t just a mode of transportation. They are statement pieces that turn heads and quicken pulses.
The brilliant yellow of the ginkgo leaves against the crisp autumn sky is nature’s own masterpiece of high contrast and visibility. This quality is directly transferable to the automotive world, where yellow is one of the most eye-catching colors on the road. This enhanced visibility is not just about aesthetics; it also contributes to safety.
The color yellow is psychologically associated with happiness, optimism, and warmth. A yellow supercar injects a dose of positivity and excitement wherever it goes. It’s a color that dares to be different from the conventional palette of neutral tones, signaling a driver who is confident and imaginative.
Beyond the emotional appeal, yellow has a rich history in the world of high-performance automobiles. While red is often linked with Ferrari, yellow is actually one of the official colors of Modena, Enzo Ferrari’s hometown, and holds a significant place in the brand’s heritage.
Similarly, Lamborghini has become strongly associated with this vibrant color, with many of its iconic models being famously presented in yellow. Choosing it connects a car to a legacy of prestige, innovation, and a defiant spirit.
A supercar is meant to be extraordinary, a departure from the mundane. It should evoke emotion and command attention, much like the golden spectacle of Jingu Gaien in autumn. While personal preference will always play a role, the case for yellow is compelling.
It is a color that is not only visually stunning and inherently joyful but also steeped in a rich automotive history. So, the next time you picture a supercar, imagine it zipping along Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Avenue on a sunny autumn day with the yellow trees providing the perfect background.
My wish was granted. Several years ago, the trees were covered in tape to prevent people from walking through the roped-off areas. This year, it was mostly gone. Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Avenue looked so much better.
Rohan has photographed Tokyo since 2011. He shoots it with his Canon EOS R5 these days. The project will take more than one lifetime to complete.
